On Wednesday I took the students to the library and Ms. Butler was able to share some information with the students about Battle of the Books. E.J. Hayes competes in Battle of the Books every year against some of the other middle schools in Fayette County. Hayes has even won the past two years! The purpose is to get students reading good books and encouraging them to have fun by competing in competitions against one another.
How does a student participate?: Ms. Butler will also be holding a meeting after school soon to give students all of the information about the testing process. Because only four students are allowed to compete in Battle of the Books it is highly competitive. A student participates by reading all of the books listed at the bottom of this post and then taking the test given by Ms. Butler in a few months. If the student is selected to participate in Battle of the Books they will need to make sure that they are available to attend the competitions. Sometimes this has been hard on students that also are participating in sports so you may need to talk to Ms. Butler beforehand.
Where do students get the books?: Students can find the books at the E.J. Hayes library or at the local Lexington Public Library. The book stores will also have them available if you would like to purchase them.
When do students read the books?: Ms. Butler will hold a “test” over the books in a few months. Students will need to have read all the books on the list to be the most competitive and able to answer all of the questions.
What is “the battle?”: A battle is a tournament where students’ teams earn points by answering questions about the books on the book list. They play several rounds of “battling” and answering questions.
What are the benefits?: The students learn to enjoy reading good books and gain a lot of knowledge. Many of them will recommend the books to their friends, parents and teachers.
For more information you can e-mail the school librarian and coach to the students that participate in Battle of the Books, Tanya Butler: Tanya.Butler@fayette.kyschools.us
I will also post more information about the first general meeting once it becomes available for those of you interested in competing.
