Reminder: Tomorrow 1st hour students have a quiz over their vocabulary words. 2nd, 5th & 7th hour’s article of the week is due tomorrow!

2nd hour, 5th hour & 7th hour students will have a quiz on Friday, February 8, 2013 over the different points of view and definitions. If the students were absent or lost their study guide here is my teacher copy. point of view study guide

Today we began reading the story “Glory Over Everything.” This is a biography about Harriet Tubman’s life. The students had some very good questions and we had a lot of discussion. We will be discussing point of view and sequence of events as we read. Tomorrow we will finish reading this short story since it is only an excerpt from a biography.

Only a handful of students have turned in their consent form to take part in the writing study. Please turn these in as soon as possible. Here is another copy in case they lost the original one sent home:

This week is flying by already!

1st hour today Mrs. Bouz helped us created a foldable to study our vocabulary. Students have 5 words and will have a vocabulary quiz on Friday 2/1/13 over these words. The students have been studying in class, however tomorrow they will be bringing their folders home to study for the night before their test.

In 2nd hour, 5th hour & 7th hour we reviewed point of view and discussed the different points of view that a text can have. Students took notes and I told them that they would have a quiz on 2/8/13 over the words and definitions.

Tomorrow we will begin our new unit on heritage. We will be reading the story “Glory Over Everything.” This is an excerpt from a biography about the life of Harriet Tubman. We will be discussing point of view as we read as well as sequencing.

Homework: 1st hour: Study vocabulary words and definitions; 2nd, 5th & 7th hour: Article of the Week due on Friday 2/1/13; Quiz over point of view on 2/8/13.

Students in 2nd hour, 5th hour and 7th hour all received an Article of the Week to do that is due on Friday, February 1, 2013.

Students received a stapled packed on bright yellow paper that is asking for the student to participate in a research study in my Language Arts class for the next 12-14 weeks. The study is being done by a student at the University of Kentucky and is looking at the use of graphic organizers to help students with their essay writing. I have explained to the students that we will be doing essay writing in class and that even if they do not want to participate in the study they will have to use some kind of an organizer. The organizers are provided by the researcher and are looking at how effective they are for the student. The study has been done at two high schools and has shown that the students that the students benefiited from using the organizers. If you give permission for your child to participate in this study I will teach them in class how to use them and they will then use them for writing essays in class. Students will not be penalized for not participating in the study. Please read over this packet tonight with your student and decide if this is something that you would be ok with them participating in in the classroom. Students can bring back the completed papers to me as soon as possible.

Today we began to talk about our new unit on heritage. I gave the students a language activity to look at how a sentence patterns fits into the overall structure of a text. The students were surprised to find how well they could read the article that uses jumbled up letters. Many of them wanted to keep their papers and share them at home.

1st hour worked on vocabulary. Tomorrow Mrs. Bouz is going to help us create foldables to study the vocabulary and then the students will need to study and prepare for weekly quizzes.

Well, the snow day on Friday threw off our writing schedule a little bit. I have a handful of students that needed today to finish up their writing piece. I used today to review a bit since I did not want to move on with such a substantial amount of students not yet done typing up their piece. I tried to make it fun so we watched some short clips and reviewed character traits of the people/characters.

I did not get a chance to copy homework this morning so students will have an article of the week tomorrow that is due on Friday. This is for students in 2nd, 5th and 7th hour.

Writing Piece Finale

I think we are finally in the home stretch of the writing pieces being done. YAY! Many students finished up their writing pieces today and a handful will finish tomorrow in class.

There has been very little homework the past two weeks (except 7th hour had homework this week one night to finish the body paragraphs of their essay). I anticipate that next week as we begin our new unit you should continue to expect homework 1-2 times a week. I already have an article of the week ready for the students on Monday of next week which will be due on Friday.

Today the students continued to work on their Edgar Poe writing piece. Most students are now typing and seeing me for revisions on their pieces. A handful of students have actually completed the final copy now. My goal is that everyone will be done by Friday. It has been hard getting the pieces types because MAP testing is still going on in the computer labs for 7th and 8th grade and the library has been booked up. Therefore, I have had to use my 8 student computers in the classroom and Mrs. Murray, Mrs. Kidder, and Mrs. Mullins have been very generous in letting me send students to their rooms during class time to type up their writing piece.

Today in class we continued to work on our writing piece about the theory of Edgar Allan Poe’s death. Most students have a rough draft ready for me to check. I have started putting them on the computer so that when they make revisions it will be even quicker for them to make their changes.

Most students in 1st hour are now finished typing up their writing piece. Several students helped me get writing folders organized during 1st hour and those that were finished enjoyed some free reading time in the reading area. Next week we will begin our new unit on Heritage.

2nd hour and 5th hour continued to work on their writing pieces about Edgar Poe yesterday. Most students are now beginning a rough draft. I will check these over and then they will type their writing piece on the computer.

I did not get to see 7th hour yesterday because we had team reward. The students got to watch the movie “Brave” and those that had above a 3.4 GPA for 2nd quarter also got a snack to enjoy with the movie.
