Happy Friday!

Today in class we had our vocabulary quiz at the start of class. We then spent the rest of the class period working on our writing pieces.

7th hour had to finish our “Insight” test that we started yesterday. This was something that we were told would help the students next year when they are choosing their high schools. The vocabulary quiz and the rest of the Insight test took up most of the class period so the last 10 minutes I let the students relax, read, talk, etc.

Homework:

Prepare for the book talk on Monday, March 3.

If you took your writing piece home you need to bring it back on Monday.

Today in class we reviewed our vocabulary words by playing a card game of “I has/who has” at our tables.

Afterwards we continued to work on our essays in class. I was able to conference with lots of students about their writing and many are now making final corrections and submitting them for a grade.

Because of the snow day yesterday the meeting to discuss the LDC writing pieces the kids have been working on will be rescheduled for some time in the next few weeks.

Homework:

Study for the vocabulary quiz tomorrow.

Prepare for the book talk on Monday, March 3 (4 days!). I’ve discussed with the students that in the event that Monday was a snow day we would begin book talks on Tuesday. If Monday and Tuesday were both snow days we would begin on Wednesday. They know that we will begin the next school day with book talks.

Bring back your essay–if you took it home to work on it.

Today we started class by playing a vocabulary word sort. The students cut apart the vocabulary word and definitions and then matched them. It is a great review activity for the kids and I encouraged them to keep their cards to help them study this week.

The rest of the class time was spent working on our writing piece, typing, conferencing with students, etc. If students were waiting on a conference then they were reading or studying their vocabulary.

Tomorrow I am out at a district meeting regarding the writing piece that we are currently working on so the kids will have a substitute. I’ve already talked to the students about expectations for substitute behavior, etc. so they know I’ll be out tomorrow.

Homework:

Study for the vocabulary quiz on Friday.

Read at least 20 minutes to prepare for the historical fiction book talk on Monday, March 3. (You can also start thinking of a fantasy book for March’s book talk.)

If you took your essay home to work on it make sure to bring it back to class tomorrow.

Today in class we went over the new vocabulary words for the week. We read through the list together today and discussed how they were used in a sentence. Tomorrow students will get the sort cards to cut apart and match. These will help them study the rest of the week as a great review game.

The rest of the class period we worked on our essay. Some students were writing, some were typing and some were meeting with me. If they were waiting to meet with me than they had independent reading time.

Homework:

Read at least 20 minutes to prepare for the historical fiction book talk on Monday, March 3 (7 days!).

Study vocabulary.

If you took your essay home to work on it as homework, please bring it back to class tomorrow.

Happy Friday!

Today in class we had our vocabulary quiz. Overall, the students did a great job. The quizzes get harder because the word root is similar so it is really crucial that the kids keep up the studying. So long as they study 10 minutes every day I am sure that they will do well on their quiz. I’ve already graded and added the quizzes to Infinite Campus and they will get the quiz back on Monday.

For the remainder of the class period we continued to work on our essay. Most classes had 40 minutes to work on their rough draft. A few students took them home to work on them, however I told them on Monday I would be checking their rough drafts to see that they had written 5 paragraphs (at least) for a grade. The students that took them home promised to have them returned on Monday for this grade.

Homework:

Read at least 20 minutes to prepare for the book talk on Monday, March 3 (10 days!).

Work on your essay (if you took it home) and make sure to bring it back on Monday!

Today in class we played a few vocabulary review games. The students first practiced with their table groups and played with the “I have/who has” vocabulary cards. After this warm-up I had the boys v. girls review game of vocabulary. I wrote the words on the board and one boy and one girl would go up and after I read the definition they had to turn around and “smack” the correct vocabulary word. It was very fun to see the kids get to into the game.

After our vocabulary games we had 20 minutes of class left and so we worked on our essays. Many students are still writing out their rough draft, although I have moved some on to the computers. I find it easier to get ahead and get the kids to type up their rough draft before I look at it. It makes it easier for me to read and the kids will often fix some of the minor mistakes as they type. It also makes corrections really easy for them!

Tomorrow we will have our vocabulary quiz and keep working on our essay.

Homework:

Read at least 20 minutes to prepare for the historical fiction book talk on Monday, March 3 (11 days!).

Study for the vocabulary quiz tomorrow.

Today in class we worked on our essay. Many students have moved beyond their first paragraph and are working on their body paragraphs, but I am now starting to check their thesis sentences and helping some students rework theirs so it is more concise.

Yesterday I was absent due to my husband being ill. I don’t think I’ve ever missed more than twice in one month but I feel like I haven’t seen the kids since I was ill 1 1/2 days last week. Unfortunately, I will be out next Wednesday for a training too.

We also spent some class time practicing our vocabulary match game that the students received from the substitute yesterday. This is a great study tool that all the students were given and told to keep to help them study.

Homework:

Read at least 20 minutes to prepare for the historical fiction book talk on Monday, March 3.

Study for the vocabulary quiz on Friday.

Today in class we began thinking about our essay and we discussed our thesis statement. 7th hour is a little behind because of the 1 hour early dismissal on Friday so we did not get to this activity–instead they were watching clips from the movie The Hunger Games as we filled out our graphic organizer.

All classes received a new vocabulary list today. They should begin to study these 5-10 minutes every night to prepare for their quiz on Friday.

This week is going to be a big writing week since we need to work on our essay. I’m going to spend all of this week just getting the students brainstorming. That means that I am not designating any day this week for reading–students will have to make sure they are getting their 20 minutes in each night at home so they are ready for their book talk. Next week we will get back to our pattern of reading 3 days a week and writing 2 days a week.

Homework:

Read at least 20 minutes to prepare for the historical fiction book talk on Monday, March 3.

Study the new vocabulary to prepare for Friday’s quiz.

Friday, February 14, 2014

Today in class we had our vocabulary quiz. I’ve already scored the quizzes and entered them into Infinite Campus. If a student was absent today they will make it up when they return next week.

We continued to watch the Hunger Games clips. One class was able to finish and the other two classes are close–I think we have 1 clip left to watch. Unfortunately, with the early dismissal I didn’t get to do this activity with 7th hour, so we will try to finish up on Monday.

We have not had as much reading time in class this week and will probably only have 2 reading days next week due to working on our writing piece. Therefore, it is crucial that students are reading their historical fiction book at home so they can still give their book talk on Monday, March 3.

I will send the new vocabulary list home on Monday with the students for their quiz on Friday.

Homework:

Read at least 20 minutes to prepare for the historical fiction book talk on Monday, March 3.
