Today in class we started a new argumentative unit. Our school recently purchased Scholastic’s Code X program. This is a set of new textbooks and teacher book that goes along with the new Common Core standards. There are also interactive parts of the book so that the kids can access online articles from a school computer.
We did a unit overview today and looked through the unit to see what we would be learning this month. Our units focused on argumentative texts, specifically articles by authors on how to end extreme poverty. At the end of the unit students will be writing their own argumentative writing piece.
I also discussed extra credit with 5th & 7th hour. I will discuss it with the other classes tomorrow. Students may receive extra credit if they write a thank you note to Mr. & Mrs. Harper for our DonorsChoose.org project that was fully funded! We received almost $300 in books to add to our classroom library. Many of these books have been checked out multiple times since we received them in January. This is probably the only time I will be offering extra credit (it’s the only time so far this year!) so I encourage all students to take advantage of this opportunity.
In addition, I sent home a permission slip to send in a few classroom photographs of the students reading the materials to DonorsChoose.org. The permission slip just states that their photographs could be used on the non-profit website to encourage future projects.
Read at least 20 minutes to prepare for the book talk on Monday, April 28. Remember, this is free choice this month! Make sure you are reading a book on your independent reading level–not too easy and not too hard.
Turn in your extra credit thank you note by Thursday!
