Good Afternoon!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! I know today was rough on the kids (and the teachers) to get back up and ready for a new day of school. It was nice to see so many smiling faces and hear their stories of visiting with family. 🙂

Today in class we started discussing an author’s argument and how to best support an argument. We watched the documentary “Plastic Paradise” last week and connected it to what we were learning in class today. We talked about the argument from the documentary and some of the supporting reasons that the author used in the documentary. We then used our workbook pages and practiced finding an author’s claim and finding their evidence on small reading passages. We will continue this tomorrow.

Several students have been asking me about their December book essay. Students will have an essay due on December 31, however I’ve encouraged them to turn their essay in on Google Classroom before they leave for winter break. However, they do have until December 31 to turn it in online.

Homework:

  • Read 20-30 minutes to prepare for the essay due on Wednesday!!! Turn it in through Google Classroom.
  • NO MobyMax and No Red Ink this week!

Good Morning!

Today in class 1st hour students finished up their unit test from Thursday. Students that finished had some class time to work on their No Red Ink quiz that is due by Saturday or to read a book while they waited for their peers to finish.

3rd, 6th, and 7th hour classes watched the documentary “Plastic Paradise” which is the start of our new unit on author’s argument. Students are evaluating the author’s argument that plastic should be banned. It is a fun way to begin our new unit!

Homework:

  • Read 20-30 minutes daily to prepare for the essay due on November 30th on Google Classroom. Feel free to turn it in early! 🙂
  • Advanced: No Red Ink active and passive voice quiz is due by Saturday.

Good morning!

First hour was a little different today because it was team reward. These students will finish their test on Monday in class. For team reward students were allowed a free period to play on the computers, their devices, or watch a movie. They were also given mini cinnamon rolls.

Today in class students finished their test from yesterday or took a retake on the tests that I had graded. Today was also our library day so if students wanted to go check-out a book I sent a few at a time. If they were done with everything they had some class time to do MobyMax or read a book.

Homework:

  • Read 20-30 minutes daily to prepare for the essay due on November 30. The essay should be typed and turned in to our Google Classroom page. Make sure you follow the essay guidelines and don’t just summarize your book. As always, they may turn it in early anytime! 🙂
  • Core: 30 minutes of MobyMax “Reading Skills Informational” is due tomorrow.
  • Advanced: No Red Ink passive and active voice practice is due tomorrow.

Reminders:

  • Any students that took a picture retake received their pictures today. Their picture orders are due by November 29.

Today the students took their test over everything we have covered in class so far this school year. This includes: central idea, theme, summarizing, author’s purpose, point of view, citing evidence, how to use the RACE strategy, etc. I promised the students they could have two days on this test so they did not feel rushed. Many will use tomorrow to finish their test.

Homework:

  • Read 20-30 minutes to prepare for the November essay due on 11/30.
  • Core: 30 minutes of MobyMax “Reading Skills Informational” is due by Saturday.
  • Advanced: No Red Ink Active and Passive voice practice is due by Saturday. This is not an essay lesson to learn and many people struggle with it. We will review a bit in class tomorrow as well.

Tonight is Literacy Night at school from 6-8 PM. We will host the school spelling bee, a poetry cafe with sandwiches, cookies, and other pastries, a literature game through Kahoot!, etc. Childcare is also available in the library where we will have storytime and color some bookmarks. It should be a fun event!

Sorry for not posting! I remembered last night right before bed that I had not posted today! I sometimes forgot to post if I get pulled into a meeting during my second planning period, am making copies, etc.

Tomorrow I will give the students a study guide. The test will cover everything we have discussed so far this year, such as inferencing, drawing conclusions, central idea, theme, author’s purpose, text structures, vocabulary, etc. We will also play some kind of a review game in class.

  • Core: 30 minutes of MobyMax “Reading Skills Informational” is due by Saturday.
